On
Thursday, September 18, 2008, Danish supermodel Helena Christensen hosted
a silent auction benefiting Food Bank For New York City and Chernobyl
Children's Project International atWinston
Wachter Fine Art Gallery in New York. Leaders in
the worlds of fashion, design, art, and entertainment put a fashionable
spin on the classic waste bin from Danish design company Vipp.
Notable participants included Michael Stipe, Christy Turlington,
and Mena Suvari. Sales prices averaged $3,000 per
waste bin and the auction raised over $50,000. The evening's
highlight was the live auction of a custom bin created by U2 front
man Bono. Containing unpublished lyrics off of U2's
next album, including a tribute to Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday,
Bono's bin set a new record selling for $30,000.
