The
Women's Board of Ravinia hosted the festival's annual Gala
Benefit Evening “Bicentennial Ball” on Saturday, July 18,
2009, this year celebrating the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial. Ravinia
music director James Conlon led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a program
featuring the quintessential symphonic work inspired by Lincoln, Aaron
Copland's Lincoln Portrait, featuring opera legend Jessye Norman
as narrator. The program also included Copland's Fanfare for the
Common Man and the rousing celebration of freedom that is Beethoven's
Ninth Symphony featuring the Chicago Symphony Chorus and soloists including
soprano Erin Wall, mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, tenor Anthony
Dean Griffey and bass Morris Robinson.
This special black-tie event began
with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on the north lawn at 5 p.m.,
followed at 7 p.m. by the concert, which proceeded without intermission.
Immediately following the performance, an elegant dinner was served in
the Gala Marquee. The cocktail reception sponsor was BMO Capital Markets
and the dinner sponsor was Aon Corporation. The concert was performed
in memory of Howard A. Stotler, a longtime Life Trustee of the Ravinia
Festival who passed away in 2008 at the age of 94. Chicago magazine provided
media support. There were approximately 800 guests in attendance at the
Gala dinner, and the evening, the only performance fund-raiser benefiting
America's oldest not-for-profit music festival, including its education
and community partnership efforts to REACH, TEACH and PLAY, raised over
$1million.
The 2009 Gala Benefit Evening was overseen by the Women's
Board committee headed by Gala co-chairmen Sarah B. Barden and Janet
W. Krasny. The committee has worked for an entire year planning this
event. Jean Berghoff, Claudia Lane and Becky Murray served as the Gala
Benefactor co-chairmen and Avy Stein and John Edwardson served as the
Trustee Benefactor co-chairmen. Jane D. Casper is the Women's Board
chairman.
The opulent décor was created by Kehoe Designs.
The Gala Marquee tent featured opulent décor created by Kehoe
Designs. When strolling into the tent, guests were transported into a
sophisticated environment inspired by Abraham Lincoln's Inaugural
Ball. Each table featured an eclectic collection of vintage china and
glassware reproductions atop a reproduction William Morris print table
linen in a gold and merlot fleur-de-lis pattern with merlot lamour napkins
surrounded by gilt bamboo chairs with merlot seat cushions. In the center
of each table, 19th-century-inspired plant stands in black wrought iron
and gold leaf classical urns filled with Victorian designs of fern fronds,
pale blue larkspurs, hydrangeas and merlot-toned asiatic lilies were
featured.
The elegant gourmet dinner, catered by Jewell Events Catering,
began with the first course including chilled minted pea soup with crème
fraiche and fresh mint, a pan-seared, farm-raised trout filet with chilled
zucchini, yellow squash, asparagus and carrot fettuccini with a sweet
corn, leek and vanilla bean relish and roasted red pepper coulis alongside
gourment greens with corn husk and a nasturtium blossom. The entrée
consisted of tenderloin of beef with a brilliant potato-and-horseradish
cake and roasted garlic cloves with a red wine and butter sauce, fresh
rosemary and thyme. The entrée was accompanied by crisp potato
gaufrette, sautéed baby carrots, red bell peppers and haricots
vert. Old-fashioned ice cream sundaes with vanilla, chocolate and strawberry
ice cream as well as bananas, fresh pineapple, strawberries, hot fudge,
whipped cream and mint were served for dessert along with chewy chocolate
chip, oatmeal raisin and white chocolate chunk cookies. Wine was generously
provided by Terlato Wines International.
