New
Yorkers For Children (NYFC) hosted their 9th annual Fall Gala on
Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Cipriani 42nd Street. The gala was
sponsored by Nordstrom. The
Fall Gala is NYFC's major fundraising event raising significant
funds to assist young people in foster
care in New York City. The evening honored Kevin Liles,
the executive vice president of Warner
Music Group, for his tireless work to promote education and inspire
disadvantaged youth. The event included cocktails, dinner and
performances by Patti LaBelle, Lupe Fiasco and Jimmy
Fallon and Mariska Hargitay was the evening's
special guest.
A focal point of this year's gala was the Guardian Scholars
Program, a signature NYFC initiative providing supplemental college
scholarships and housing to college-enrolled youth in foster care.
Jamie Niven hosted a live auction raising more than $350,000 offering
gala attendees an opportunity to champion the Guardian Scholar program. So
far this year's Gala has raised nearly $1.85 million.
Kevin Di Benedetto, a junior at Binghamton University, received
this year's New Yorkers For Children and Nordstrom Spirit Award,
which includes a $10,000 scholarship.
Presenters included: Mariska Hargitay, Jamie Niven, Lyor
Cohen, Commissioners Nicholas Scoppetta and John B. Mattingly,
Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs, and special video tribute to
Kevin Liles by celebrities whom he has influenced over the course
of his career including Lil Wayne, Serena
Williams, Musiq Soulchild, Mary J. Blige, T.I., LL Cool J, Russell
Simmons, Julie Greenwald, Mike Kyser, Carmelo Anthony, Trey Songz,
Terrence J, Roxy, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Ne-Yo and
a video tribute to the young people in foster care in attendance
by Antwone Fisher.
