On Tuesday, April 7, 2009, The National Arts Club's Literary Committee presented Joyce Carol Oates with their prestigious Medal of Honor for her work as one of America's most respected and honored writers. The dinner took place at the National Arts Club in New York.

Since 1968, The National Arts Club's Literary Committee has honored those literary community influentials with their Medal of Honor. This nationally coveted award is presented to the author of a body of work that has proven literary excellence; the recipient is chosen by the Literary Committee members. Aldon James, president of The National Arts Club, presented Oates with this distinguished award.

Joyce Carol Oates, Gloria Vanderbilt, Daniel Halpern, Edmund White and Gregory Heisler were in attendance among many others from the literary arts community.
