On
Tuesday, September 16, 2008, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) hosted a reception
to celebrate the opening of Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night (September
21, 2008–January 5, 2009), the first exhibition to examine
Vincent van Gogh's lyrical view of the night through nocturnal
interiors and landscapes, which he often combined with other longstanding
themes of his art. This exhibition includes approximately 24 paintings,
10 drawings, and a selection of letters from all periods of Van Gogh's
career, as well as examples of the rich literary sources that influenced
his work in this area. The exhibition is organized by Joachim
Pissarro, adjunct curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture,
The Museum of Modern Art, and the Bershad Professor of Art History
and Director of the Hunter College Galleries, Hunter College, New
York; Sjraar van Heugten, head of Collections, Van
Gogh Museum, Amsterdam; and Jennifer Field, curatorial
assistant, Department of Painting and Sculpture, The Museum of Modern
Art.
