On
Tuesday, December 2, 2008, The MacDowell Colony's artists and
friends gathered for its annual National Benefit in New York City.
Set amid the dazzling views of the new 7 World Trade Center, MacDowell
Shines! celebrated the amazing creative vitality that the Colony
shares with the City. The benefit honored a quintessential New York
artist, actor Jane Alexander, for her contributions
to American culture and long service to the Colony. Renowned actor James
Earl Jones and MacDowell's chairman Robert
MacNeil led a luminary cast of performers and special
guests in this tribute. Other program participants included Sundance
film director Josh Marston, groundbreaking composer
and theater artist Meredith Monk, acclaimed novelist Rick
Moody, the band One Ring Zero, award-winning
puppeteer Basil Twist, actor Eli Wallach,
and Sam Waterston. All work featured in the program
is created by artists who have been in residence at The MacDowell
Colony.
Among the benefit's honorary co-chairs were artist Jenny
Holzer, playwright Tina Howe, artist
and MacDowell medalist Ellsworth Kelly, actor Cynthia
Nixon, architect I.M. Pei, sculptor Martin
Puryear, actor and director Robert Redford,
and composer and MacDowell medalist Steve Reich. Robert
Olmsted and Stephanie Ligon Olmsted were Benefit chairs.
