In
honor of Lung Cancer Awareness month, on Monday, November 2, the Lung
Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF) hosted its First Annual Public Symposium
and Fourth Annual Lung Cancer Awareness Luncheon at The Plaza Hotel in
New York City.
The symposium titled The Future Path of Lung Cancer offered
a venue for members of the public to learn about the latest treatments
and innovations in lung cancer research. Leading medical experts in the
fields of lung and thoracic oncology and cancer-related psychiatry headlined
the event, including Dr. Thomas J. Lynch Jr. MD, Director of Yale Cancer
Center and Physician-in-Chief of the new Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New
Haven; Jimmie Holland MD, attending psychiatrist and Wayne E. Chapman
Chair of Psychiatric-Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center;
and Deborah Schrag MD, MPH, attending physician and clinical investigator
at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
The symposium was followed by a fundraising
luncheon chaired by Laurie C. Carson, Pippa
Gerard, Kimberly Kravis Schulhof,
and Michele Wolkoff. This annual event included a keynote address from
Dr. Thomas J. Lynch Jr. and a special presentation of the LCRF 2009 Scientific
Merit Award to Dr. Christopher Bakkenist of the University of Pittsburgh
Cancer Institute. Over 200 guests were in attendance, raising more than
$250,000 for innovative lung cancer research. To mark the occasion, Mayor
Michael Bloomberg proclaimed November in the City of New York as Lung
Cancer Awareness month.
