The fourth
annual Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. National Physician
of the Year Awards took place on Monday evening,
March 23, 2009 at the Hudson Theatre at the Millennium Broadway Hotel
in New York City. The evening began at 6:30PM with the awards
presentation followed by a cocktail buffet. Jeremiah Barondess,
M.D., President Emeritus of The New York Academy
of Medicine, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Arthur
Hull Hayes, Jr., M.D., Former Commissioner of the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration, was the Awards presenter.
This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Emil
J Freireich, M.D., D.Sc. (Hon.), Ruth Harriet Ainsworth
Chair, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Director,
Special Medical Education Programs, Director, Adult
Leukemia Research Program - The University of Texas
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and to Thomas E. Starzl,
M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Surgery, Emeritus Distinguished
Service Professor - University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Carol R. Bradford, M.D., Professor and Chair, Department
of Otolaryngology -University of Michigan Medical School; Diane E.
Meier, M.D., Director, Center to Advance Palliative
Care - Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and Judd W. Moul, M.D., Chief
of Urology, Director, Duke Prostate Center - Duke University Medical
Center each received the Clinical Excellence Award, designed to recognize
physicians who exemplify excellence in clinical medical practice.
Page Morton Black, Chairman of the Board of the
Parkinson's Disease Foundation, received this year's
National Health Leadership Award.
Physicians profiled in the Castle Connolly “Top Doctor ” guides
are selected following an extensive nomination, research and screening
process, which involves soliciting nominations from tens of thousands
of doctors across the United States each year. Those very
same outstanding Castle Connolly “Top Doctors” were involved
in the nomination process to identify the recipients for the Castle
Connolly awards for clinical excellence and lifetime achievement.
