On
September 24, 2008, Carnegie Hall opened its 118th season with a
gala benefit concert featuring music director Michael
Tilson Thomas leading the San Francisco Symphony
in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. The performance also
launched Bernstein: The Best of All Possible Worlds, a three-month
citywide festival honoring one of the most important international
musicians of the 20th century and a quintessential New Yorker—Leonard
Bernstein—in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of his birth
and the 50th anniversary of his appointment as the Music Director
of the New York Philharmonic. The opening night concert featured
an all-Bernstein program that featured music from a wide variety
of Bernstein's stage works—from such early triumphs as West
Side Story and On the Town to later works, Mass and A
Quiet Place. Soprano Dawn Upshaw, baritone Thomas
Hampson, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and Mr.
Thomas, who all worked with and learned from Leonard Bernstein,
were joined by Broadway star Christine Ebersole for
the concert.
The Opening Night Gala of Carnegie Hall's 118th Season was
chaired by Suzie Kovner and Bruce Kovner and co-chaired by Mercedes Bass and
Sid Bass. The gala sponsor was PricewaterhouseCoopers with
major support for the Opening Night Gala Broadcast by S. Donald Sussman. The
benefit included a gala dinner at The Waldorf=Astoria's Grand
Ballroom following the concert. The gala, which was attended
by more than 600 guests, raised close to $4.2 million. All
proceeds benefit Carnegie Hall's artistic and education programming.
