On
April 28, 2009, three youth, aged 10, 13 and 18, along with their mentors
from Big
Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, shared their stories
and experiences from the Waldorf – Astoria's ballroom stage,
as they presented awards to this year's inspiring honorees at
the 30th Annual Sidewalks of New York Gala, celebrating the agency's
105th Anniversary. Honorees included three incredible
role models, who's personal and professional successes are attributed
to the mentors they had in their own lives: New York Giants Superbowl
champion defensive end, Justin Tuck; CNN anchor and special correspondent,
Soledad O'Brien; Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC chairman emeritus
and long-time supporter, Edward L. Gardner, president of Industrial
Solvents Corporation.
Each award was presented to the honoree by a child and his/her mentor.
Over the past two months, these matches had been writing and rehearsing
their introductory remarks -- making for moving, heartfelt presentations
sparkling with individualized wit and personality. This year's
event reached its fundraising goal of $ 2 million dollars, which supports
programs helping the youth of New York City
NFL Hall of Famer, Lynn Swann served as Master of Ceremonies
and dazzled guests with his humor at the well-attended event. Richard
D. Parsons served as dinner chair.
