Aperture
Foundation, a world-leading nonprofit arts institution dedicated to
promoting photography, held its 2008 Benefit and Auction
on Wednesday, October 22, at Pier 60, Chelsea Piers, New York. This
year's event honored four individuals: William Christenberry,
one of the most extraordinary photographers of our time; Christiane
Fischer, art patron and Chief Executive Officer of AXA Art Insurance
Corporation; Peter MacGill, renowned New York gallerist; and Diane
Tuft, art patron and photographer. The Benefit and Auction is being
co-chaired by Cathy Kaplan — Aperture board member, avid photography
collector, and partner at Sidley Austin LLP, New York — and art
patrons and philanthropists Lois Robbins Zaro and Liz Swig.
A cocktail reception and silent auction of
donated classic and contemporary photographs and monographs was followed by a
dinner, live auction, and award ceremony. Geraldine Nager, senior vice president
and director of Photographs, Sotheby's, was
the auctioneer. Among the exciting artists who were featured in the auction were:
William Christenberry, Carrie Mae Weems, Gabriel Orozco, Richard
Misrach, Mitch Epstein, Jason Oddy, Eikoh Hosoe, Erwin Olaf, and Garry Winogrand,
to name a few.
The Aperture Benefit and Auction attracts leaders from the international art,
photography, publishing, design, business, and philanthropic communities. Proceeds
from the event will support Aperture's publications, exhibitions, and public
programs.
