The
ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, honored
Martha Stewart with the ASPCA Presidential Service Award at the Twelfth
Annual ASPCA Bergh Ball on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Plaza Hotel
in New York City. The award was presented by ASPCA President & CEO,
Ed Sayres.
The ASPCA Bergh Ball is an annual black-tie gala that draws a passionate
crowd of animal lovers who come to dine and dance in support of the
ASPCA's mission, "to provide effective means for the prevention
of cruelty to animals throughout the United States."
The event was emceed by popular designer Isaac Mizrahi while Jamie
Niven of Sotheby's served as the event's auctioneer.
Founded in 1866, the ASPCA was the first humane organization established
in the Americas, and today has more than one million supporters throughout
North America. A not-for-profit corporation, the ASPCA's
mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty
to animals throughout the United States.
I don't understand the ASPCA. On the one hand, they claim credit in their 2007 form 990 for passing this Illinois law which prohibits felons from owning unneutered/unspayed dogs and then the honor Martha -- who everyone knows is a felon (un- fairly prosecuted by the Bush Admin.) but still a felon. If she lived in Illinois, she would have to give up her pets!
